This first stage involves no recognition that there are better ways of communicating.

In this stage you know there are better ways of communicating, but you don't use them because you haven't learned how.

In this stage you begin to use good communication skills, but you have to stop and think about what they are and how to use them.

This is the automatic application stage. You use the effective communication skills without stopping to think about them.
