The Gatewood family is allied with the Edwards group thru the marriage of Dorothy Gatewood, Oct. 8, 1771 to John Edwards . She died June 15, 1778 and was the mother of Rev. John Edwards.

A lot information given on the Gatewood family has been collected by Floyd Howes in correspondence with two members of the Gatewood family that lived in Texas.

It appears that the first Gatewood, or the great-grandfather of Dorothy Gatewood Edwards was John.  His wife's name was Amy, and .they lived in Essex County, (Old Rappahannock) Virginia.  John and Amy's 4th son was Henry Gatewood, born in Essex County, died in Spotsylvania County, Virginia, in 1777.  His Estate Was settled in November 23, 1778.  Henry Gatewood, who died in 1777, was married to Dorothy Dudley, at least by August in 1714.  This is shown by a deed of Henry & Dorothy Gatewood, who sold land to Thomas Ball, Deed Book 14, Page 268, Essex County, Virginia.  It is known for sure that Dorothy was the daughter of Richard and Elizabeth Dudley.

The will of Richard Dudley, dated July 16, 1716, Book. 15, Deed & Wills, page 79, Essex County Virginia, shows that his wife Elizabeth made a payment of money to Henry Gatewood in 1722.

We believe that Dorothy, wife of Henry Gatewood, was the mother of most of all of his children.  Henry did marry a second time, to a Tabitha Collins, the widow of Edmund Foster.  She could have been the mother of two sons, Richard and Larkin Gatewood, for all three of these by record are shown to be living in Elbert County, Georgia in 1790.

Henry Gatewood lived for a time in King and Queen County, Virginia.  In Deed Book C-1734-1742, of that county, is a record that Hugh and Otay Saunder of Spotsylvania sold land to Henry Gatewood of King & Queen County, 207 acres in St George's Parish on a. branch of the Mallapon, for eleven pounds.  July 6, 1742.

Henry's Will was dated January 28, 1777, Will Book E, page 190, Spotsylvania County, Virginia.  Here is a brief of that Will ----- Henry leaves to his wife Tabitha, Negroes Pharaoh and Sary ----- to son Dudley, negro woman Sall and her two children, now in his possession ----- I lent to son William and his wife Ann, negro Humphrey and girl Siller.  I bequeath these: ---- to my son William's three sons William Jr., Austin, and Ambrose, are to have Humphrey and Siller, jointly.  To my son Peter, a negro woman, Flora and her child Lucy.  To son, Larkin a negro Rose and her child, already now in his possession, to son Richard, a negro named Joe and boy--Will, to my daughter Keziah Sandidge a gold ring.  My land of 230 acres. to sold and after debts are paid, to be divided between wife  and daughter Dorothy Foster and six sons Viz: Dudley, Henry, William, Peter,  Larkin and Richard  is appointed executor. ---- Will is witnessed by Edward Herndon, Edmund Foster, John Frazier.
Executors Bond issued December 18,1777, Spotsylvania County.  Will Book E, Page 192.  ----- Bond secured by John Herndon, John Holloday Sr. and Charles. Dick.

Richard Gatewood, Administrator

The Estate final settlement was on November 23, 1778, with division of money going to Henry, Dorothy, Peter, Richard Larkin, Dudley, William and wife Tabitha.  Will. Book E, Page 269. (Note that Keziah was not included )

Dudley Gatewood, a son of the Henry Gatewood above, was born about 1718, he died 1787, in Bedford County Virginia.  He appears on record in Spotsylvania County, as a large land owner, as much as 500 acres.  He also lived. for a time in Amherst County, Virginia, 1765-1772.  In 1782 he is shown on the Poll tax List as one poll and owning 20 slaves. December 6, 1743, Dudley Gatewood, "Gentleman" is commissioned to be an Ensign in a Mililitia Company of Foot under Capt. Duerson in Spotsylvania County.  In Deed Book H, 1771-1774~ he and. his wife, Sarah sells to Edward Brasfield, 220 acres in Berkeley, Parish of Spotsylvania County, Virginia.

Dudley and Sarah had a son James, the eldest who settled in Woodford County, Kentucky.  He, James, left a Will in Woodford, Will Bk. F, Page 45, dated June 1, 1817.  In that County he is shown on a tax list as owning 6 slaves over 16 years of age and a total of 34, plus 18 horses.  In 1801 he owned. a total of 56 slaves and 18 horses.  By 1816 he was taxed. for only 1 slave and seven horses. James Gatewood's wife was Frances Scott, born June 27,1745, they were married December 30, 1766, probably in Amherst County, Virginia.

Henry Gatewood Jr., son of Henry Sr., and the next Gatewood ancestor of this Edwards Family, was born circa 1720, died in June or July of 1799, in Spotsylvania County, Virginia. (Will Book F. Page 79)  He married first to Mary _______, she died prior to 1777.  He married second to Ann Webb, she died before February 7, 1792.  In Will Book E, Page 1147, Spotsylvania County Records, Ann and Henry had recorded an Agreement in which each was to have full power over their separate Estates.  It was called in the record, a Marriage Agreement, and was witnessed by John C. Webb, Edmund Collins, John Edwards, and David Sandige.  In the Agreement, Henry gave Ann, 100 acres for hers, during her natural life.  This Marriage Agreement is mentioned in Ann's Will dated February 7, 1792.

Floyd’s Note: ----- The John Edwards signing as a witness is John #2 of this Edwards Family History and he was the son-in-law of Henry Gatewood Jr.  We have no information on the rest of the children of Henry Gatewood Sr., William, Peter Larkin, Richard, Keziah, who married John Sandige, and Dorothy, who married Thomas Foster.

Known children of Henry Gatewood Jr., and his wife Mary:

1.  Sarah Gatewood, married Richard Collins, went to Kentucky.

2.  Mary Gatewood, married Moses Quisenberry, settled in Bourbon County, Kentucky.  She died in Green County, Kentucky.  Son Moses Jr., appointed Administrator of her Estate July 25, 1814.

3.  Margaret Gatewood, married Wharton Schooler, and went to Kentucky.  He left a Will in Fayette, County Kentucky, June 7, 1819, naming wife Margaret, son Lewis, son-in-law Robert Schooler, daughter, Pats Allen, Polly Schooler, Sarah Adams, Beulah Estes, Betty and Margaret Schooler.

4. Dorothy "Dolly" Gatewood, married John Edwards #2 of this history.

In the Spotsylvania County, Virginia Records, Deed Book P,.1797-1800, is this transaction that has to do with the heirs of Henry Gatewood, giving permission to sell 138 acres of land in that County.  Richard Collins and Sarah, his wife, of Kentucky---by Henry Collins their attorney in fact, ---.Moses Quisenberry and Mary, his wife of Orange County, Virginia, --- Wharton Schooler, and Margaret, his wife, of Kentucky, --- John Edwards, by his attorney in fact, and Henry Gatewood and Ann, his wife of Spotsylvania County, Virginia --- all heirs of Henry Gatewood Sr., deceased, sells and convey to Martin Brent, 138 acres of land in Spotsylvania County.  Whereupon said Henry Gatewood Sr. deceased lately lived in Spotsylvania County. Witnessed by:  Henry Towles, Peter Hicks, John Pierce. Received into Record December 3, 1799.

Floyd’s Note:  This is land owned by the father of Dorothy Gatewood Edwards.

5.  Capt. Henry Gatewood III, son of Henry Jr., and brother to Dorothy Gatewood Edwards, married, first to Delphia Pemberton Garnett, the widow of Larkin Garnett.  Capt. Henry may have been a. soldier of the Revolution, hence his military title. Delphia at her marriage to Henry had one son James Garnett.  She was the daughter of Charles and Sarah Pemberton.   Capt. Henry married a  second time to Ann ___________.  His Estate was appraise July 26, 1822.  Will Book K, Page 223, Spotsylvania County, Virginia.  The division of his Estate occurred April 30, 1823.  Will Book K, page 332.  This division shows he had then a wife named Ann, who received her dower of 97-1/2 acres and 11-3/4 acres which included the house.  Sons, Bennett, 69 acres, --- Henry, 68 acres, ---D Dorothy Jones, 80 acres, --- Sally Jones, 110 acres, --- Dudley Gatewood, 92-1/4 acres, --- Philadelphia Naylor, 50 acres, --- Mary Chandellor 40 acres, all land on the Lewis River on both sides of the turnpike in Spotsylvania County, Virginia.
My Note: ----- For no other reason other than it is quite interesting and amusing that pertains to the family of Capt. Henry Gatewood.

As we have stated, Capt. Henry married a widow, Delphia Pemberton Garnett --- she then had an infant son --- James Garnett.  This record is in the Woodford County, Kentucky, Court file #37, for the reason that some of Capt. Henry and his wife, Delphia's family had migrated to Kentucky, one of those was James Garnett , by this time a man and in that state.  Capt. Henry also had a son -- Henry -- who had gone to Kentucky.  This record will have to be read slowly, to digest i.

Say James Garnett Heirs appearing before Justice of the Circuit Court of C Caroline County, Virginia, on <May 15, 1794. --- On October 7, 1788---Henry Gatewood and wife Delphia, --- James Garnett an infant, by his next friend who is the said Henry Gatewood brought a suit against one James Garnett Jr.,, the executor of the Estate of James Garnett Sr., deceased.  deceased is the father of James Jr.--also against Charles Pemberton and Thomas Garnett.  The suit stated that in about 1770--Larkin Garnett, son of the deceased James Garnett Sr. --- said Larkin Garnett was about to pay his addresses to "your oritrix'' --- Delphia is the daughter of Charles Pemberton of Spotsylvania County Virginia.  To encourage and induce the said Larkin Garnett to marry said Delphia Pemberton, he, the said Charles Pemberton promised to give Larkin, l negro slave.  Said Larkin died about 1772, leaving his only son, James Garnett an infant.  The said James Garnett, the eldest of the two, died about 1776. Left a Will, appointing his wife Sarah, sons Thomas and James, as executors.  This Will left a negro slave. to the infant James Garnett.

My Note: it appears that Delphia had the son of Larkin--the infant James Garnett, left by his death in her care.

"01d Mrs. Sarah Pemberton answered the suit August 15, 1789 in Carolina County, Virginia.  The suit was abated by the death of Charles Pemberton, her husband.  It was reported that the so called "infant plaintiff James Garnett was at this time in Woodford County, Kentucky.  And it is further reported. that he is to be married to a daughter of Robert Foster Bowling at the home of Bennett Pemberton.  In 1791, James Garnett was reported to be at the home of Henry Gatewood in Woodford County, Kentucky.  also taken at this time were the depositions of William Truman and Elizabeth Edwards.

Elizabeth Edwards is the wife of Uriah Edwards Jr., #3.

We are going to include the Will of Charles Pemberton, mentioned in the above suit, as it leaves property to Elizabeth Pemberton Edwards, wife of Uriah Edwards Jr., #3 of this history. The old man also gets everyone covered if Henry and Delphia Gatewood should happen to win the suit against him.  From the tone of the old. man's Will it would appear that Capt. Henry is trying to get some free negro slave property by the use of a civil suit.

Will of Charles Pemberton, father of Delphia Pemberton Garnett Gatewood and Elizabeth Pemberton Edwards.

Woodford County Kentucky --- Will Book A, Page 47, dated January 11, 1790,  probated at April term of Court in 1792.

In the Name of God, Amen.  I, Charles Pemberton; of the County of Woodford, State of Kentucky . . . . . . . .

ITEM:

I lend and bequeath unto Sarah Pemberton, my dear and beloved wife, during her natural life, one negro fellow named Sambo, one negro Sam, negro wench Diniah, negro wench Hannah, negro wench Daffney and negro girl Lett and negro boy Randolf, four cows, and calves, three feather beds, one horse and two mares, together with all household furniture during her natural life and then divided as I shall hereafter mention.

ITEM:
I give unto my daughter Delphi Gatewood two shillings sterling to her and her heirs lawfully begotten of her body forever.

ITEM:
I give unto my daughter Elizabeth :Edwards, one negro girl named Sealy to her and her heirs lawfully begotten of her body forever,. also one negro wench Dafney after mine and my wife's deceased.  Also an equal part of all stock and household furniture that remains after the death of my wife.

ITEM:
I give unto my son Bennett Pemberton one negro boy named Edmund.  Negro girl Lucy, also one large Bible and my riding saddle and all my wearing clothes and one shot gun. Also an equal part of all stock and household furniture after my decease.
ITEM:
I give unto my daughter Nancy Owen, negro girl Judy to, her and her heirs lawfully begotten of her body forever.  Also one negro girl Lett after my and my wife's decease.  Also an equal part of all stock and household furniture that remains at the death of my wife.

ITEM:
My will and desire is that if Henry Gatewood obtains his false and groundless suit he has brought against me for a certain negro wench named. Dafney and increase, which I never promised, which Negroes I have left to Elizabeth Edwards and Nancy Owens.  Now if the said Elizabeth Edwards and Nancy Owen should lose the above Negroes left to them by the said suit, my will and desire is that Elizabeth Edwards should have  a certain Negro boy named Randall, bequested to my wife if she loses those already bequeathed by said suit.

ITEM
My will and desire is that if Gatewood obtains the Negroes as before mentioned, that my son Bennett Pemberton give up one of the Negroes bequeathed to him by the name of Lucy to Nancy Owen and her heirs forever. The other named Edmund to remain the property of my son Bennett Pemberton and his heirs forever, and at the death of my wife Sarah Pemberton, all the Negroes then living and increase, if any, not bequeathed to some of my children, to be equally divided, together with what stock and household furniture is left between my daughters Elizabeth Edwards and my son Bennet Pemberton an my daughter Nancy, Owen.  But should the Negroes to wit:  Dafney, Lett, Selah and Judah, never be obtained by Gatewood nor Garnett, then my will and desire is that my Estate be divided as is first mentioned in my Will.

ITEM:
I constitute and appoint my son Bennet Pemberton to be my whole and sole executor of this my last will and testament and I do make, void and dis annul all other wills and testaments before made, he being to pay my legacies and discharge them as before mentioned.

In witness where of, I have hereunto set my hand and affixed my seal this 11 day of January in the year of our Lord and Savior, 1790, in the presence of the names under written, both signed and sealed.  Signed and sealed in the presence of Samuel Cox, John Price Jr., and William Truman.

 Signed: Charles Pemberton

Woodford County, Kentucky, April Court 1792. ----- The last will and testament of Charles Pemberton was proved by the oaths of Samuel Cox and William Truman, and ordered to be recorded, whereupon Bennet Pemberton, executor named in the said will, made oath hereto, according to law and entered into and acknowledged bond with Benjamin Craig and John Major, his securities in the penalty of one thousand pounds, conditioned as the law directs.  Certificate is granted him for obtaining a probate thereof in due form.

 Testified to:
  Cave Johnson,
  Clerk of the Court

Floyd’s Note: ----- So, by this Will, we see that Delphia was a daughter to Charles.  She had been married to Larkin Garrett, and had a son James.  Larkin died, Delphia married Henry Gatewood, he files suit to recover Negroes allegedly promised by old Pemberton to Larkin if he would marry Delphia.  -------- In the end all Delphia got was two "Shilling sterling."

Gatewood's seem to have been people of property for their times, here is a couple of records and transactions handling negro slaves by Gatewood cousins of Reverend John Edwards children.  These take place in Kentucky.

Deed Book 1, Page 459, Barren County, Kentucky:
Robert S. Gatewood to Sophia Gatewood, gift of love ----- Negroes, Amy, Nancy, Mary, Maria, Anderson, Alcy, William, Caty, and Caroline ---- and to Achilles Gatewood, Negroes Sabra, Emily, and David.  Both are children of Robert S. Gatewood and under the age of 21.

Deed Book 24, Page 395, Montgomery County, Kentucky:

A list of slaves imported from the State of Virginia, on February 5, 1853.  Mary - 24;  Caroline - 16;  Pluler - 6;  Stephen - 21;  William 8 years of age.  I swear that I have imported them for my own use and not to be treated as merchandise ----- none has been imported to the U. S. since January 1, 1808, or that any of them has been convicted or a felony . . . . . . . . . W. B. Gatewood

These are some family names in this Gatewood history that settled in Kentucky, and on to Clay County, Missouri.  Brasfield -- Brock -- Gatewood.

Brock came to Andrew County, Missouri, from Clay County, Missouri.
